3 Keys to Success in the Gym |
Every single woman over the age of 35 that walks into StrongHER says something along the lines of….“What I used to do doesn’t work anymore!” Feel familiar? Usually what they are referring to is one of the following: cutting calories, fasting, cardio out the wazoo, weight-loss medications/supplements Wanna know why? Because you aren’t young anymore! Stick with me here. Ever notice how your 3 year old, even 10 year old, can get a scrape and it will heal in a few days but as they grow and WE grow those scrapes take a week or longer? As we age, our bodies slow down the cellular regeneration process, which means results take longer but ALSO, our bodies USE THE NUTRIENTS WE GIVE THEM to make NEW CELLS. So when we cut out taco bell in 2005 and dropped 20lbs in a week then resumed eating it, we barely gained anything back because we had faster growing new cells and cleaner cells. Now…sorry. Taco Bell cells don’t work like chicken and broccoli cells. It’s a sad and disappointing story that leaves every single woman frustrated and a bit angry, which I get. Cause now we have to do the HARD work in our 40s when we already have 40 years of habits So lets dig into KEY NUMBER 1 – Nutrition Ewwwww I don’t wanna! I know girl. I know. I literally just finished eating my eggs and oatmeal (which I eat every day) and would be LYING if I didn’t acknowledge I would prefer a blueberry muffin or buttery biscuit instead. But…goals and feeling good ya know? Nutrition is a difficult thing to navigate as we ALL have EMOTION wrapped into the things we eat. Whether it’s stress, comfort, or the need for “easy & simple” choices that lead us to consuming foods that may be deprived of nutrients and addictive. Did you know McDonalds figured out if you make the burgers and fries X amount of salty people would buy sodas that are X amount sweet? Yea, in fact they have their OWN VERSION of Coca Cola products based upon this research. So that’s why it tastes differently there! <—The goal of food companies is to make money by keeping you addicted to them so don’t feel like it’s a YOU thing. It isn’t. But also don’t think I’m knocking fast food. I love me some french fries. Here is the other thing, we NEEEEEEEED calories so cutting calories is NOT a good option either. In fact, many women I meet UNDER EAT! When we cut calories TOO MUCH, we end up slowing down your metabolism. Remember how your body makes new cells right? Less nutrients means less new cells, means less healing, means less fat burning, means less health. So…..EAT! And eat well! As uncomfortable and difficult it may be to make nutritional changes, I PROMISE YOU that over time, the choices become easier, the cravings less, and the results….SUPER sustainable! If you’re struggling with making nutrition a reasonable and sustainable thing, message me.
