Gym Hunting? Here’s Your Guide to Interviewing Gyms!
Hey Girl HEEEEY
So, you’re looking for a new gym? Great choice! But before you rush into any “exclusive membership offers” or sign on to some eternal monthly plan, let’s talk about how to properly interview gyms. (Yes, this is a thing.)
Here’s the truth: finding the right gym is a bit like dating. You want to make sure you’re compatible, that they meet your needs, and that you’re not committing to something you’ll regret in a few months. Here’s your crash course in Gym Interviewing 101:
- Know What YOU Need: Have you tried and quit before? Gotten injured? Dealing with some health issues? Make sure you are clear what level of accountability you need. Do they notice and reach out when you skip? Can they navigate your injuries and are they knowledgeable or even willing to work with your medical providers to not only get you to your goals but do it safely? HINT: If they don’t ask health history questions, walk away.
- First Impressions Matter: Walk through the door, take in the vibe. Are you immediately inspired, or are you more inclined to pull out the hand sanitizer or feel isolated? If it smells like a middle school locker room, that’s probably a red flag. If they offer you a freshly laundered towel with a ridiculous smile? Potential green flag.
- Check the Equipment (aka “Are They Worth the Price?”): Do they have all the right gear? Barbells, lockers, squat racks, plenty of dumbbells? If it looks like the equipment hasn’t been updated since the ’90s, maybe look elsewhere. Don’t be the girl things break on. BEEN THERE
- Test the “Rush Hour” Situation: Some gyms look perfect—until you show up at 5:30 PM. Go around peak hours and see if it turns into a scene from “Survivor: Gym Edition.” If you have to fight for a barbell or get locked out of a class because it’s “full” as soon as it opens. Maybe reconsider that gym or look for a private facility that’s proactive about class sizes. No one wants to pay for something they can’t access
- Evaluate the “Community” Factor: This one’s underrated but huge. Does it feel like people are focused, friendly, or maybe even a little intimidating? You want a gym that feels supportive, not like everyone’s training for a Mrs. Universe competition (unless that’s your vibe) or a Mean Girls Club.
- Observe the “Hidden Fees” Trap: Ah, the infamous “processing fee” and “annual fee.” Before you sign anything, make sure there are no extra charges lurking in the shadows. Ask questions, because some gyms can avoid sharing these fine details.
- Gauge the “Trainer Energy”: Are the trainers professional and approachable, or are they scrolling through their phones while clients lift? Even if you’re not getting a personal trainer, this is a good indicator of the gym’s vibe. Plus, a quality trainer or staff member can be a big help when you need a spot!
- Read the Fine Print—For Real: Some gyms lock you into contracts that are harder to get out of than a bad lease. Make sure the terms work for you.
