How to Keep Calm and Conquer Holiday Stress
The holidays are supposed to be “the most wonderful time of the year,” right? But for many of us, they’re also “the most stressful time of the year.” Between juggling family obligations, shopping lists, and endless to-dos, it can feel like the season of joy is actually a season of overwhelm.
But don’t worry—you’re not alone, and there are ways to navigate the chaos with a little more calm. Here are some tips to manage holiday stress and actually enjoy the season.
1. Prioritize What Matters Most
Not every tradition or event needs to be on your calendar. Think about what really matters to you—whether it’s spending quality time with loved ones, volunteering, or just savoring a peaceful evening at home by the fire. Once you’ve identified your priorities, say yes to the things that align with them and no to the rest, guilt-free! ‘Cause yea girl. YOUR mental health matters too!
2. Make a Plan (and Stick to It!)
Holiday chaos often comes from last-minute decisions. Create a schedule for shopping, meal prep, and events, and stick to it as much as possible. Block out time for yourself, too—whether that’s for a workout, a quiet cup of coffee, or simply zoning out in front of a holiday movie. My personal favorites include: National Lampoons Christmas Vacation and The Grinch!
Pro tip: Write down your top three tasks for each day. It keeps things simple and helps you focus without feeling overwhelmed. I am LOST and chaotic without my daily task list!
3. Move Your Body
Exercise is one of the best stress-busters out there. Even a 20-minute lift session can help lower cortisol (the stress hormone), boost your mood, and keep your body feeling energized during the season of indulgence. Don’t worry about doing a “perfect” workout—just move in a way that feels good.
4. Keep Nourished (and Hydrated!)
It’s easy to let healthy eating go out the window during the holidays, but fueling your body properly can make a huge difference in how you feel. Focus on prioritizing your day with protein, healthy fats, and fiber to keep your energy and hunger stable. And don’t forget water! Staying hydrated can prevent fatigue and headaches, especially if you’re enjoying a few festive cocktails.
5. Set Boundaries with Grace
The holidays can bring up family dynamics or social situations that test your patience. It’s okay to set boundaries. Politely excuse yourself from conversations that feel draining or say no to events that don’t serve your well-being.
Example: “I’d love to catch up, but I’ve got a lot on my plate right now. Can we connect another time?”
Remember. YOU matter…and…setting boundaries with a game plan for YOURSELF gives your children permission to do so as well. Be your own best example of joy and self love!
Stay tuned for Part Two! Dropping Friday!
Here’s to a holiday season filled with more joy and less stress!
