Momentum vs Motivation

I have seen it over and over again. Women get into a stride working out and eating in a nourishing way only to have something happen that derails them.

A death, stressful week at work, change in schedule, traveling, you name it (cause you know you’ve been there) and all of a sudden the progress stops, then regresses.

Months later you’re starting over. Disappointed. Unsure of why you couldn’t make it work. Feeling crappy about yourself and defeated.

The difference between the “them” who get results and keep them vs the prior, is the realization that expecting to be motivated consistently is a big fat LIE!

Momentum gets you SO MUCH FURTHER than motivation.

Seriously, I’ve been in the gym for 20 years now. I have a great physique, am healthy, managing my Hashimotos medication-free, not because I’m motivated, but because I create and maintain momentum.

How is momentum different?

I go when I don’t want to. When my schedule sucks. When I am tired. I go when I really don’t feel like it. I go when on vacation, when working a 60 hour week, when my mom died, when my dog died, when my best friend betrayed me, when I felt like a pile of dog poo. The only time I DON”T go is if I am sick or feel like I am coming down with something <—not a cold either, like the real deal flu kinda stuff.

Same with my nutrition. I literally told my daughter this yesterday. I don’t eat eggs every morning, broccoli and chicken for lunch, and avoid sugary carbs because that’s how I WANT to eat. It’s because I SHOULD. My body feels and functions its BEST when I eat this way. <–seriously, I love fries and chocolate but that doesn’t do my body any good long term

Hear me out though…

I do take breaks from the gym. A whole week off. It is usually unplanned but ends up being weeks I’m overbooked, overstimulated, over it all. And I have the freedom to take these breaks with zero consequence for two reasons.

  1. I do 90% of the time so my momentum is STRONG af
  2. I will go back consistently once the week is over

Same with my nutrition. I enjoy some chocolate, nachos, fries once a week and it creates zero negative reaction…why? Because above! 90% of the time I’m eating in a way that nourishes my cells so 10% of the time I can nourish my emotions and cravings!
