Why You Need a Mental Break on Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving is often a day of gratitude, delicious food, and connection. But let’s be honest—it can also be a whirlwind of chaos. Between cooking, hosting, family dynamics, and trying to keep the mashed potatoes from burning while entertaining your aunt’s life updates, it’s easy to forget to pause and breathe.
This year, give yourself the gift of a mental break. Here’s why it matters and how to make it happen.
Why Taking a Mental Break Matters
Thanksgiving is a marathon, not a sprint. Without a moment to recharge, you might find yourself feeling frazzled, snappy, or too exhausted to enjoy the feast you worked so hard to prepare. Dis. Be. Me. Taking a mental break isn’t selfish—it’s a way to refill your tank so you can show up for yourself and the people around you.
How to Carve Out Your Moment of Peace
1. Step Outside
The kitchen may be calling, but the outdoors are where the magic happens. Even a five-minute walk can do wonders for clearing your mind and giving you a breather from the chaos inside. Bonus: Fresh air can help you reset if you’re feeling overwhelmed by noise or bustling activity.
2. Delegate, Delegate, Delegate
You don’t have to do it all. Assign tasks to others (Pro Tip: Delegate BEFORE Thanksgiving morning)—whether it’s setting the table, watching the kids, or stirring the gravy. Use those free minutes to sneak away for a quiet moment. A bathroom break with the door locked counts!
3. Focus on Your Breath
Feeling tension creep up? Close your eyes, inhale deeply for four counts, hold for four counts, and exhale for four counts. Repeat a few times. This simple technique lowers stress and brings you back to the present moment.
4. Create a Quiet Zone
Designate a space in your home as a “no-stress zone” for the day. Whether it’s a bedroom, porch, or cozy corner, let family know it’s a spot for anyone who needs a breather. This is 100% my bedroom. Which is also decorated for Christmas and that brings me JOY!!! (Hint: You’ll probably be the first one to use it!)
Reframe the Chaos
Thanksgiving’s hustle can feel overwhelming, but it’s also a reflection of love and togetherness. When the day starts feeling like a chore, remind yourself of why you’re doing it. Gratitude doesn’t just apply to the food on the table; it’s about appreciating the messy, beautiful moments that make the day special.
You Deserve a Break (Yes, You!)
Remember, Thanksgiving isn’t about perfection—it’s about connection and presence. By taking a moment for yourself, you’re actually making the day better for everyone around you. After all, a calm and collected host (or guest) is the secret ingredient to any successful holiday.
So, this Thanksgiving, step back, breathe, and let yourself enjoy the day. You’ve earned it.
Here’s to a peaceful and joyful holiday—chaos and all!
